If you're lucky, your melee combo will knock Waka on his back, temporarily turning him gray. While Waka's discolored, use the Power Slash brush technique to strike him and deal a nice chunk of damage. Repeat this pattern until Waka gives in.
You're now free to explore the Agata Forest and partake in any and all sidequest available. When you're ready to revive the main quest, look for the boy Kokari who's waiting on a small island in the middle of the forest.
Talk to Kokari a few times until he starts repeating himself, then give him a good headbutt to get him in the mood to fish. Draw a line from a fish to the end of Kokari's reel to begin the fishing mini-game. Pull the line opposite the direction the fish is swimming to pull it in, then be ready to use a Power Slash brush stroke to finish off the fish.
After catching two fish, only one large fish will remain. Catch this giant salmon and it'll spit up the Ruins Key. Bring the Ruins Key to the entrance of the Tsuta Ruins at the south end of the forest and continue on to the next area.
Tsuta Ruins
As you enter the Tsuta Ruins, Issun will suggest using Water Lilies to cross the blackened pond. Ignore his suggestion (the lily pads don't last) and instead go right. Beware of attacking trees that again lob fruit at you as you move through the first doorway.
You'll have to summon a Water Lily in the area ahead to reach the ledges ahead. At the top of the ledge, take note of the unmovable sphere. Just ahead is a new enemy type—the bud ogre—that you'll need to defeat before you can move the sphere. To defeat the bud ogre, use the Power Slash brush technique to knock back the fruits it throws. When you've stunned the enemy, use Bloom to open its bud and then move in for the kill.
Now you can push the sphere onto a small pressure plate that opens up the next door. Just ahead, you'll be attacked by two bud ogres. Finish 'em off and you'll clear the area, allowing a few mushrooms to sprout. Spin the camera to highlight the sky and use the Sunrise brush technique to bring sunlight to the mushrooms. Climb the mushroom platforms to the next walkway.

Bomb open the next wall and continue into another area of the ruins. After crossing into yet another room, a cutscene will show the walkway begin to crumble. Dash straight ahead and keep on running (you shouldn't have to worry about jumping) until you make it to the next room. Here you'll find a doorway with a funny-looking lock. For now, drop down to the floor way below the platform you're currently on.
At the bottom of this pit you'll find Blockhead, a stubborn block that needs to be moved. Headbutt Blockhead and two weak spots will appear on his body. Use the brush to touch the two points where the weak spots appeared (they're random) to crush Blockhead and create a path leading back to the very beginning of the Tsuta Ruins. A key will also appear at the bottom of the pit. Pick up the key and carry it back to the platform far overhead to unlock the odd lock.
Just past an Origin Mirror ahead, you'll reach a rather open area with three demon gates. Defeat all of the demon gates by passing through them and fighting the enemies that appear. When all demon gates are closed, another batch of mushrooms will appear in the center of the room. Summon the sun with the Sunrise brush technique through the hole in the ceiling and the mushrooms will sprout up tall, letting you jump up to the upper ledge.
You'll find four spouts pouring poison into the waterfall just ahead. Destroy them with a Power Slash brush stroke to purify the water, then bust open the chest to the left before dropping down the waterfall. After the first drop, follow the flow of the water to another waterfall that brings you to the beginning of the ruins.
With the waters now cleaned, you can safely swim into the mouth of the cave in the center of the area (the cave that's presently glowing). Once inside the cave, use Bloom to rejuvenate the three dead patches of grass. You'll then need to complete a constellation (there are two missing stars) to learn the Vine brush technique. Use it to leap to the Konohana blossom ahead, then follow Issun's instruction to continue the upwards spiral. Eventually, you'll reach a doorway that takes you to another part of the ruins.
Keep climbing! There are more Konohana blossoms to swing between, so keep it up. After grappling to a few more blossoms, you'll find yourself on a peak with a large bowl covering the ground. Use the Vine brush technique to hook the surrounding Konohana blossoms to the hooks on the bowl. The bowl will lift away, letting you drop down to an Origin Mirror and continue to the boss battle.
A cutscene introduces you to the Spider Queen, an imposing foe that's currently the biggest trouble you've got. Luckily, most of the challenge from this fight comes from figuring what to do. Once you understand the goal, you shouldn't have too much difficulty in defeating the Spider Queen.
As the fight begins, stand away from the enemy but don't run around. Just stand still until you see the Spider Queen spew white stringy tentacles. Immediately start running either left or right to avoid the white tentacles and they should give up trying to grab you.
Once the tentacles have gone back to their home, stand still again and wait for the Spider Queen to bull rush you. She won't attack right away, but watch her front arms to clue you in to her incoming attack. As she slams down with her hands, use the Divine Retribution's secondary attack to guard against the strike. You may need to defend against a second attack before the Spider Queen reveals her weakness.
Eventually the enemy monster will retreat a bit and stick up the wilted bud that forms her butt. Use a Power Slash to strike the bud, knocking the Spider Queen down and revealing a set of hooks. With the hooks exposed, use the Vine brush technique to connect the hooks to the Konohana blossoms surrounding the fallen Spider Queen. With two hooks connected, the bud will be torn open, revealing the vulnerable bunch of eyes inside.
You can jump up to attack the eyes with melee combos, or line them up for a Power Slash brush stroke to damage all at once. As you attack, watch for the opened bud to begin trembling. This signals the impending closure of the bud, which is your sign to get the heck out of there. Back away from the Spider Queen and repeat the process from the beginning. Eventually, the Spider Queen will give up the dog inside, along with the Snarling Beats divine instrument.
Agata Forest
You'll automatically return to Agata Forest where you'll speak again with Kokari who's gained the courage to rebuild the broken bridge. To follow Kokaru, look for the path to the southwest that leads to Taka Pass. There'll you find Kokari and trigger a cutscene that shows the almost certain doom of one legendary fighter, Susano.
As the cutscene progresses, Ameratsu gets involved. While riding the log down the raging river, use the Vine brush technique to tie the log to the Konohana blossoms that fly by on the left and right sides of the screen. You can afford to skip by a couple of them, but if you miss too many blossoms you'll fail to connect all six points of the log before the ride ends. To make it easier, tap the brush button randomly to briefly pause the action, giving you a better chance to spot blossoms as they whiz by.
When all six hooks of the log are attached to vines, the ride will stop and a bridge will form, spanning the wild waters below. Cross the bridge and continue southwest to reach Taka Pass.
Taka Pass
Unsurprisingly, Taka Pass is afflicted with a cursed zone and it's your job to clear it. Follow the path to the left and you'll find a large rock blocking a passage. Draw a Cherry Bomb to blow the rock away, letting you down a narrow tunnel that leads to another battle with Waka.
This battle is very similar to the fight you had before. Again, we recommend using the Devout Beads as your secondary weapon, giving you a projectile attack you can use to damage Waka without risking getting too close to his sword. Your main concern will be Waka's on projectile attack, a slow moving missile that you can easily jump to avoid.
The projectile shots won't damage Waka much, but the enemy will make himself more vulnerable soon enough. Wait for Waka to unleash a sword combo—either standing or dashing across the arena—and avoid all of the hits. After the combo ends, Waka will be temporarily dazed and drenched in gray. Use this opportunity to quickly deal damage with a Power Slash. Repeat this shoot and wait process until Waka gives in again.
After defeating Waka, head up the long, spiraling walkway nearby and continue through a tunnel to reach another outdoor area of Taka Pass. Go north and you should soon see the Guardian Sapling in the not-too-distant distance. Rebuild the nearby bridge with the Rejuvenation brush technique, then use Bloom to revive the Guardian Sapling and restore life to Taka Pass.
The rejuvenated Taka Pass is now open for the exploring, and there's plenty to do and check out. In fact, there's so much to do that it's easy to get lost and sidetracked. If you're aiming to just continue the main quest, head west and then south to reach Kusa Village.
As you enter the village, you'll lose your brush powers as the evil in the air saps them away. Don't worry too much—you'll get the back soon enough. Head west, up the large hill path, until you reach a building with Princess Fuse standing in front. Speak to Princess Fuse and the demon possessing her will come out to fight you.
You still don't have your brush techniques, but that doesn't mean Amaterasu is without bite. Attack and kill the enemies, using air strikes to knock the floating blue imp out of the air. When all enemies are defeated, Kusa Village will return to its not-possessed state as your brush powers are regained.
Princess Fuse will then ask you to track down a few lost dogs and gives you the Canine Tracker to help you do so. Follow the Canine Tracker to a nearby bridge and jump off. Blow up the cracked wall and you'll find Rei, a hungry pup. Go to your tools menu and offer Rei some meat (if you don't have any meat, you can buy some from the merchant at the village entrance). When the dog is fed he'll return to Princess Fuse—one down, four to go.
The other canines can be found by similarly following the Canine Tracker's direction. One is near the village entrance, though he only appears after you've revived the bit of cursed land. One is found inside a bamboo tree next to the home of Mr. Bamboo (chop down the tree to find the dog). Another warrior canine is tucked away inside a long and narrow tunnel above the main village (use the Vine brush technique to grapple to the upper walkway). The fifth dog you'll find on your way back to Princess Fuse, standing where the princess was just a few short minutes ago. This guy, however, will not be persuaded by the smell of meat alone.
Challenge Canine Warrior Tei to a fight. Though Tei's attacks are viciously powerful, you can get through this battle pretty easily if you know when to back off. Attack Tei while he stands still, but watch for the canine opponent to pull back and sparkle in the light. As he does, retreat, running circles and jumping away from Tei to avoid the charge attacks. After Tei's stopped attacking, go back to melee combos until he pulls back for another attack.
Eventually Tei will get dizzy and turn gray, your cue to unload a Power Slash brush stroke to deal a considerable chunk of damage. Repeat the process of attack and retreat, and Power Slash when Tei becomes vulnerable to quickly wear him down and end the fight.
After the fight, you'll learn that there are three more canine warriors spread across the land. These remaining dogs are hidden much further than the stretches of Kusa Village. To find them you'll have to venture back to areas of the world you visited long ago.
